Can I Have a Baby if I Have PCOS?

Date :26/11/19

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, is a very common hormonal condition seen in women. Women with PCOS can struggle to get pregnant and are also at higher risk of developing complications during pregnancy. However, by treating the symptoms, many women with PCOS have the chances to become pregnant and have a healthy baby.

PCOS can cause a woman to produce abnormal levels of male hormones. If you suffer from PCOS, it is important you see your doctor and find the cause of your symptoms. With early diagnosis, the symptoms of PCOS can be treated effectively.  This reduces the risk of complications and increases the chances to get pregnant.

PCOS Symptoms

Symptoms of PCOS:

  • Irregular periods or absence of monthly menstrual cycle.
  • Unable to get pregnant due to irregular ovulation.
  • Abnormal hair growth usually on the face and chest.
  • Abnormal weight gain.
  • Hairloss.
  • Oily skin.
  • Acne.
  • Headaches.
  • Mood swings.

Few guidelines you must follow:
Women with PCOS struggle to become pregnant due to the high level of male hormones which prevents the release of the egg. Your chances of pregnancy can be increased by following few guidelines:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Follow a healthy diet.
  • Do exercise regularly.
  • Plan your sexual intercourse according to the ovulation.
  • Visit your specialist regularly and take the necessary guidelines.

If you have made necessary changes and that still hasn’t helped, your doctor might suggest any fertility test and prescribe fertility medications to help you ovulate. If medications don’t work, he might suggest you Ovarian drilling to remove a tiny amount of tissue that produces excess male hormones in the ovaries. If all these fail the next option is IVF which offers you a better chance of conception. However, this can be expensive and is usually only considered when all other options have been unsuccessful. Proper lifestyle changes can help you to improve the chances to get pregnant.
